I love how peopel are comparing this to the fact that there are dragons in the game. The OP is NOT talking about the same thing here. It makes the characters less real and someone who you can less believe in. I have no hate against the gay/lesbian/transgender/everything else community, but it makes it harder to identify with characters if everyone is a blank slate that you can woo regardless of anything. The point of the friends is to help you put yourself in the game with the dragons and monsters because they are people you can relate to. You can’t relate to someone who is interested in whatever sex you are playing as.
if you see any character in dragon age ii as a blank slate in any fashion then i have to seriously wonder if you played this game. every single character, including the love interests, has their own agenda, their own morals, brings something new to the table and everyone even has a life outside of hawke. they interact with each other and form really interesting relationships outside of hawke (ie: isabela and merrill, isabela and aveline, varric and anders, so forth).
it is not unrealistic to have four (five, since it is hilarious that OP used aveline as an example since she asks f!hawke if she ever thought there was something between them just as she will ask m!hawke if you play your cards right) bisexual people within fifty feet of each other. sexual orientation does not make a motley crew of incredibly well-written characters weaker.
it’s incredibly ironic that you chose to bring up relatability in this argument. like, if we were climbing irony olympus, you would be zeus. because guess what! the people you have “no hate for, but” are horrendously under represented in just about every medium and many of us sure would appreciate being able to relate to characters who are actually queer instead of the same old straight shit in nearly every single romance subplot ever. it’s harder for many of us, who do in fact play the same games y’all do, to relate to characters, and especially relationships, who are all heterosexual all the time.
